Refuting the Christian defense of Deuteronomy 22:28

Christian apologists, as desperate as they are to defend literally every single problem that is pointed out in their book, have come up with a way to cover up the Mosaic law that is found in Deuteronomy 22:28-22:29. A previous article on this website already addressed it. The link to that article will be listed at the end of this article.

Back to the point, no matter how clear something is, they try just as hard to defend the Bible and cover up for it, often while prompting discrimination among other disgusting acts. The verses in Deuteronomy 22:28-22:29 say: "If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days."

That's clearly a command to force rape victims to marry their rapists, if you actually read that verse and accept it as it is without trying to lie to yourself and cover it up. But if you're clinging to that book, then you'll do what apologists do best, which is to make a false defense or cover up for it. In this case, Christian apologists are, of course, accusing critics of contextual error.

Their go-to verse is in the same passage. 22:25 is their favorite. It says "But if the man find the damsel that *is betrothed* in the field, and the man *lay hold on her*, and lie with her; then the man only that lay with her shall die." Two verses later destroy the context argument. Verse 27 says "For he found her in the field; the *betrothed damsel* cried, and there was none to save her."

Verses 28 and 29 follow immediately afterwards. So yes, this passage does partially have a death sentence for rape, but only if the man rapes a woman who is betrothed to another man (verse 25). Verse 28 is about a woman who is not married. The same passage forces her to be with her rapist for life. Ironic how these apologists are doing the very same thing they accuse us of doing, which is taking this passage out of context. In fact, they are deliberately ignoring the details.

The passage makes it clear what Yahweh's laws would implement in today's world if we allowed it. Apologists would ignore rape victims being forced to marry their rapists while praising the execution of those who rape married women. They would ignore the injustice and continuously make excuses to justify it.

I encourage those who read this article to actually read that passage and take it as it is without trying to reinterpret it and justifying it. Here's a short summary of what Mosaic law says about it:

•Man marries woman, accuses her of not being a virgin, the woman's parents have to defend her, a bunch of random men lift her garment and look at her privates (completely violating her basic rights and dignity), he is forced to pay a hundred shekels of silver to her father and permanently marry her for life (even if she wants to leave after that) if he was lying. If his accusation is found to be true by the random men looking at her privates, then she gets stoned to death. (verses 13-21)

•A man and a woman has willing intercourse while the woman is married, both are stoned to death. (Verse 22)

•A man has intercourse with a woman who is a virgin and is married in the city, the woman doesn't cry out (whether if she's willing or **too scared to cry out**), they both get killed since she didn't cry out. (Verse 23-24)

•A man rapes a woman who is married, the man gets put to death, no fault is found on the woman. (Verse 25-27)

•A man rapes a virgin woman who is also not married, he pays money to the woman's father and buys her, she is stuck with her rapist for the rest of her miserable life, she never gets a chance at true love. (Verses 28-29) (A strong recipe for Stockholm Syndrome at best)

There you have it. Another attempt of apologists to cover up for a horrendous and disgusting command from the Biblical Yahweh has been refuted. Perhaps it's time to stop defending the Bible when it can't even defend itself. Also, stop using the Bible to do bad things. Human rights are the law of the land (for the most part). Get over it and stop promoting bad things.
